Carlos Alcaraz set up a blockbuster Monte Carlo Masters final against chief rival Jannik Sinner after defeating local favourite Valentin Vacherot in the semi-finals on Saturday.
The Spanish star secured a 6-4, 6-4 victory to keep his title defence alive and book a Sunday showdown with Sinner that will also determine the world No.1 ranking when the new ATP standings are released on Monday.
It will be the first meeting of the season between the world’s top two players, adding further weight to an already high-stakes final.
“I think it’s the dream scenario for everyone,” Alcaraz said. “I’m fighting for a second Monte Carlo title, he’s fighting for his first. It’s going to be a very special match, and the No.1 spot makes it even more meaningful.”
The 22-year-old, who leads their head-to-head 10–6, broke Vacherot three times en route to victory in 84 minutes. He is now chasing his third title of the season after earlier triumphs in the Australian Open and Doha.
“I’m very happy to win this tough match against Valentin,” Alcaraz added. “He’s been playing with great confidence, especially at home. It was not easy, but I’m excited for the final.”
Sinner powers through Zverev
Earlier on Saturday, Jannik Sinner booked his place in the final with a commanding 6-1, 6-4 win over Alexander Zverev.
The 24-year-old became the first player since Novak Djokovic in 2015 to reach the finals of the season’s first three Masters 1000 events. Only Roger Federer (2006) and Rafael Nadal (2011) have previously achieved the same feat.
“I’m very happy,” Sinner said. “We came here looking to get feedback on clay, and reaching the final means a lot.”
Sinner said he felt in control from the outset against the world No.3.
“Every match is different, but I was solid from the beginning,” he said. “Getting an early break changes everything, so I’m very pleased with the performance.”
The Italian was dominant in the opening set, breaking Zverev three times to take it in just 34 minutes. Although the German offered more resistance in the second set, Sinner continued to dictate play and eventually closed out the match in 82 minutes.
Zverev has now gone without a win against Sinner since the 2023 US Open, with the Italian once again proving too strong in their recent meetings.
Sinner has lost just one set in his last 21 matches at Masters 1000 level, underlining his remarkable consistency heading into Sunday’s final.
