Seven killed in fatal auto crash in Yobe

Seven persons have been killed in a fatal road accident along the Damaturu–Damagum Road at Gaggaba village in Fune Local Government Area of Yobe State.

The Yobe State Police Command confirmed the incident in a statement on Thursday. According to the Police Public Relations Officer, Dungus Abdulkarim, the crash occurred at about 1:20 p.m.

“On January 15, 2026, at about 1:20 p.m., a fatal motor vehicle accident occurred at Gaggaba village within the Damagum area,” Abdulkarim said.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the accident involved a DAF trailer with registration number DAL 963 YY, driven by Malam Abubakar, 35, from Maiduguri, Borno State, who was travelling from Lagos to Maiduguri, and a Mitsubishi Canter with registration number XA 437 NNR, driven by Salisu Ibrahim from Dirra village in Fune Local Government Area.

“It was gathered that upon reaching Gaggaba village, the Mitsubishi Canter, allegedly driven at excessive speed, lost control, veered off its lane and collided head-on with the oncoming DAF trailer,” the statement said.

As a result of the collision, both drivers, three occupants of the trailer and two occupants of the Mitsubishi Canter died instantly, bringing the total number of fatalities to seven.

While sympathising with the families of the deceased, the Commissioner of Police, Emmanuel Ado, expressed concern over the rising number of road traffic accidents in the state, which claimed no fewer than 120 lives in 2025.

He called for collective efforts by motorists, transport operators and relevant authorities to address reckless driving and improve road safety across the state.
