The Lagos State Government has officially launched the Lagos Identity Project, a digital house-numbering initiative designed to enhance property identification and streamline service delivery across the state.
Speaking at the unveiling ceremony held on Tuesday in Alausa, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Enterprise Geographic Information System (eGIS), Dr. Olajide Babajide, said the project marks a major step toward improving public service efficiency and urban management in Lagos.
“This project is about providing Lagosians with the world-class services they truly deserve,” Babajide said. “We’ve faced challenges such as tax evasion and untraceable addresses—this new digital system is the solution.”
The initiative features digital address plates embedded with QR codes and color codes unique to each local government area. These smart identifiers will support a range of services, including emergency response, postal delivery, and urban planning.
By scanning the QR code on a property, residents and relevant agencies will be able to access verified information about the building, helping to combat issues like rental fraud and aiding in emergency tracking and response.
Babajide also linked the project to broader smart city goals, citing previous digital infrastructure developments such as the data center established during President Bola Tinubu’s tenure as Lagos State Governor—an achievement that contributed to international recognition from institutions like the World Bank for Lagos’ leadership in digital governance.
He revealed that the project would kick off in Ikeja, where 23,000 properties have already been identified for numbering, starting in July. The rollout will gradually extend to other local government areas across the state.
“We’re advising all owners of properties that have been subdivided to come forward for reidentification,” Babajide added.
