EPL: Diaz ends goal drought as Liverpool move seven points clear

Liverpool extended their lead at the top of the Premier League to seven points with a hard-fought 2-1 win over struggling Wolves on Sunday, as Luis Diaz ended his goal drought to ignite the victory.

After a tough week, Arne Slot’s side bounced back, with Diaz netting his first goal of 2025 and Mohamed Salah continuing his red-hot form. Diaz opened the scoring early in the first half, marking his 13th goal of the season after a 10-game dry spell. While Diaz had struggled in front of goal, Salah was once again clinical, adding a penalty before halftime to bring his tally to 28 goals in all competitions this season.

Matheus Cunha pulled one back for Wolves in the second half, but despite a nervy finish, Liverpool held on for the win, securing a valuable three points.

The victory came after Liverpool had gone two games without a win, suffering an embarrassing FA Cup exit to second-tier Plymouth last weekend, followed by a frustrating 2-2 draw at Everton on Wednesday. Arsenal’s 2-0 win over Leicester on Saturday had put extra pressure on Liverpool, but they responded in style to remain firmly in the title race.

Liverpool, who last won the Premier League in 2020, are now closing in on a record-equalling 20th league title. They will be within touching distance of the crown if they can secure maximum points from upcoming trips to Aston Villa and Manchester City before hosting Newcastle in the next 10 days.

Despite being charged with abusive behavior towards referee Michael Oliver after the Merseyside derby, Liverpool boss Arne Slot was in the dugout for this match. Slot had been furious over a controversial equalizer by Everton in stoppage time, but he urged his players to channel their anger into a strong performance against Wolves.

The Reds wasted no time getting started. In the 15th minute, Diaz latched onto a return pass from Salah, with the ball deflecting off Toti Gomes and rolling into the net after Diaz chested it past Wolves keeper Jose Sa. It wasn’t a pretty goal, but Diaz wasn’t complaining about the scrappy finish.

Liverpool continued to dominate, with Dominik Szoboszlai narrowly missing with a powerful shot, and Sa denying Diogo Jota at the near post after a dangerous cross from Andrew Robertson.

Wolves were unable to contain Liverpool’s attacking pressure, and the Reds doubled their lead in the 37th minute. Despite claims from Wolves that Diaz had pushed Emmanuel Agbadou before being fouled by Sa, VAR upheld the decision, and Salah confidently converted the penalty to make it 2-0. Salah’s continued brilliance, with seven goals in his last six games, highlighted his importance to Liverpool as his contract nears its conclusion at the end of the season.

Wolves had a chance to get back into the game early in the second half when debutant Marshall Munetsi was through on goal, but Alisson Becker was quick off his line to make a crucial save.

There was a brief moment of hope for Wolves when Jota was brought down by Agbadou, but VAR overturned the penalty decision after replays showed Jota had dived. Wolves then pulled one back in the 67th minute, as Cunha expertly curled a shot into the far corner to reduce the deficit to 2-1.

The late goal set up a tense finish, with Liverpool struggling to regain their earlier momentum. However, they held on to secure a vital three points, making it four wins in their last five league games.
