IGP bans police officers in mufti from carrying rifles

Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has issued a stern warning to police officers across the country, urging them to uphold the law and avoid misconduct, including violations of citizens’ rights.

In a virtual meeting with police managers on Monday, IGP Egbetokun stressed that no police operative should be seen carrying assault weapons, such as rifles, while dressed in civilian clothes (mufti). The directive, shared in a statement by Force Spokesperson Muyiwa Adejobi, was part of a broader message to improve professionalism within the force.

The IGP revealed that the Force has received several complaints related to rights violations through its official complaint channels. He warned that any officers found guilty of violating human rights will face severe consequences.

In addition to the ban on improper attire, the IGP also cautioned all tactical squads against the misuse of power and improper dressing. He emphasized the need for officers to always operate in the approved uniforms designated for their respective squads.

“All tactical squads are expected to adhere strictly to the standard operating procedures and wear the appropriate uniform for their unit,” the statement read.

Furthermore, the IGP addressed the issue of indiscriminate case transfers, reiterating that no case should be transferred without his written approval. He made it clear that such actions, which cause unnecessary delays and burdens on parties involved, will no longer be tolerated.
