Belgium sacks national football team coach Tedesco

Belgium’s football association (RBFA) announced the dismissal of national team coach Domenico Tedesco on Friday following underwhelming performances at Euro 2024 and in the Nations League.

“Unfortunately, the Red Devils did not meet expectations at Euro 2024, nor in the subsequent Nations League campaign,” the RBFA stated on its website.

Tedesco was appointed in February 2023 to replace Roberto Martinez, tasked with rebuilding the squad after the departure of Belgium’s “golden generation.” While Tedesco led the team to qualification for Euro 2024, Belgium was eliminated in the Round of 16 by France. The team also suffered two defeats to France in the Nations League, finishing third in their group and now facing a relegation play-off against Ukraine in March.

“I was always proud to be the coach of the Red Devils, and we achieved great things together,” Tedesco said. “This team is still in the early stages of its development, and I believe they will make a mark in the years to come. I wish the players, the dedicated staff, and the fans all the best from the bottom of my heart.”

Alongside Tedesco, five members of his coaching staff were also dismissed.

“Domenico had a strong start as national coach and showed that there are still great achievements possible even after the previous generation’s farewell,” said RBFA CEO Peter Willems. “He integrated several young players into the squad, and his successor will be able to build on this foundation. We thank him and his team for their hard work and dedication and wish them the best in the future.”

The RBFA has not set a timeline for appointing Tedesco’s successor, but Belgian media reports have suggested that Frenchmen Rudi Garcia and Thierry Henry are among the leading candidates.

Belgium will begin their 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign with a trip to North Macedonia in June.
