Members of the Lagos State House of Assembly have impeached Speaker Mudashiru Obasa following multiple allegations of fraud.
The Clerk of the House, Mr. Olalekan Onafeko, was also indefinitely suspended, while the Chief Whip, Mr. Mojeed Fatai, was appointed as the new Deputy Speaker.
Multiple sources confirmed that Obasa’s removal took place during a plenary session on Monday, although the full details of the impeachment remain unclear. As of press time, the Deputy Speaker, Mojisola Meranda, was sworn in as the new Speaker.
Obasa’s Chief Press Secretary, Eromosele Ebhomele, did not respond to calls or text messages seeking comment on the development at the time of this report.
Commenting on the impeachment, lawmaker Abiodun Tobun, representing Epe Constituency 1, said: “Change is inevitable; only death is constant. Today, members of the parliament have decided to change the leadership of the House. The Constitution empowers us to regulate our proceedings. The members agreed we had reached the limit with Mudashiru Obasa’s leadership. We unanimously selected Hon. Mojisola Meranda as the new Speaker and Hon. Fatai Adebola as the Deputy Speaker. This decision was supported by all members of the House.
“All principal positions and standing committees have been dissolved. We are committed to working together to elevate the parliament and restore its integrity. We cannot afford to let the House falter. We owe it to our constituencies and Lagos State to restore the House’s dignity and reputation.”
Tobun did not provide specific details regarding the reasons for Obasa’s impeachment.
Recently, Obasa had dismissed accusations that the Assembly spent ₦17 billion on a gate as “spurious and laughable.” The Lagos State Anti-Corruption Coalition had claimed the Assembly used this sum for the project and called for an investigation.
During a plenary session, Obasa rejected the allegations, calling them politically motivated. “It’s absurd. How much is the Assembly’s total annual budget for anyone to claim we spent ₦17 billion on a gate? They even alleged we spent ₦200 million on the 22nd Thanksgiving service, which is false. As elections in 2027 approach, these baseless claims will resurface. It seems some people are frightened, and I don’t understand why. The House has not undertaken any such project. We are not reckless. Our Thanksgiving event was held last Friday and attended by dignitaries from across the state,” he said.
Obasa, a six-term lawmaker representing Agege Constituency I under the All Progressives Congress, had served as Speaker for several years and previously faced allegations of financial mismanagement within the Assembly.
