NCC to hold stakeholders meeting Thursday over telecom tariff hike

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has scheduled a stakeholders’ meeting in Abuja to address the proposed 100% tariff hike by telecom service providers.

The meeting will bring together industry representatives, consumer groups, and other stakeholders to discuss the potential impact of the price increase. The aim is to chart a way forward on the issue, which has sparked significant debate.

“I had previously called for the NCC to address and resolve this issue. Yesterday, I was invited to the meeting, which will take place on Thursday in Abuja at 2 pm,” said Adeolu Ogungbanjo, President of the National Association of Telecommunications Subscribers.

Telecom operators have requested the 100% increase, citing rising operational costs, security challenges, and the need for the protection of infrastructure such as masts as key reasons behind the proposed hike. However, the NCC has yet to approve their request.

Sola Ajulo, President of the Consumer Advocacy Foundation of Nigeria, also confirmed the meeting and emphasized its importance. He noted that while a price increase might be unavoidable due to the country’s current economic challenges, it is crucial to ensure that any hike is fair and reasonable.

“It’s essential that all stakeholders are present and reach an agreement, as this will influence whether the government approves the price increase and under what conditions,” Ajulo stated. “A 100% or even a 40% increase might be too steep. A more gradual increase with measurable conditions could be a more reasonable approach.”

As part of its regulatory role, the NCC is tasked with ensuring telecom operators comply with industry standards and regulations.
