Peter Obi, the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, has praised lawyer and activist Dele Farotimi as a man who is deeply committed to a “better Nigeria.”
In a series of tweets on Friday, the former Governor of Anambra State lauded Farotimi’s character following a visit to him. Farotimi had recently returned from a correctional facility in Ekiti, where he was detained after being arrested on December 3 by the Ekiti State Police Command.
Farotimi’s arrest stemmed from allegations of defamation and cyberbullying brought against him by prominent legal figure and Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Aare Afe Babalola. Babalola accused Farotimi of defaming him in a 116-page book titled Nigeria and Its Criminal Justice System.
Obi noted that, since Farotimi’s release, they had not had the chance to meet until now. “I was pleased to find him in good spirits and greatly encouraged by his unwavering dedication to the cause of a better Nigeria,” Obi wrote. “Dele Farotimi exemplifies courage in the face of adversity, consistently standing up for good governance in our nation.”
The former governor concluded by wishing Farotimi a fruitful and productive year, expressing hope for continued collaboration in the pursuit of the country’s development.
