US will have to give Iran ‘the hammer’ at some point, says Trump

US President Donald Trump has renewed his threat to launch fresh military strikes against Iran, warning that Washington may eventually have to take stronger action against Tehran.

Speaking at a campaign rally in Iowa on Sunday ahead of the November 3 midterm elections, Trump suggested that he had so far held back from further attacks but warned that the situation could change.

“And the only reason why I’m not finished with Iran is I want to be nice. I want to try and save all those lives if I can… But at some point we’re going to have to give them the hammer,” the 80-year-old president told supporters.

In response, Iran warned that any renewed conflict with the United States could last longer than the previous round of fighting, insisting that Washington would not determine how or when a future war would end.

Iranian army spokesman Mohammad Akraminia, speaking according to Iranian state television, said Tehran was prepared for the possibility of a prolonged confrontation.

“A potential future war could last longer than previous conflict, and the American president would not be in a position to dictate the timing or the conditions of its conclusion,” Akraminia said.

The exchange of warnings comes amid renewed tensions between Washington and Tehran, with Trump’s remarks signalling the possibility of further military action and Iran cautioning against any attempt to escalate the confrontation.
