Bayern Munich coach Vincent Kompany has been taken to hospital after collapsing during a training session, the German club has confirmed.
“Vincent Kompany had to seek medical attention on Friday after collapsing during a training session with FC Bayern’s reserve team,” Bayern said on their official website.
“Kompany is undergoing thorough examinations at the hospital and will remain under medical care.”
The 40-year-old former Manchester City defender had also missed training and a press conference on Tuesday ahead of Bayern’s Champions League clash against Arsenal at the Allianz Arena.
Explaining his absence after the match, Kompany said he had been battling a severe viral infection.
“I caught a pretty nasty virus last week, and of course I didn’t listen to my body — and then at some point my body just said, ‘enough is enough!’” he said.
Bayern sporting director Max Eberl said on Friday that the coach’s health remained the club’s primary concern.
“His health is our top priority,” Eberl said.
“We at FC Bayern will do everything we can to ensure he recovers quickly. Vinnie is receiving all the necessary medical care and support, as well as all the time he needs. His coaching staff, whom we trust completely, will take over his duties.”
Kompany, who extended his contract with Bayern in October 2025 until 2029, was appointed in the summer of 2024 after the club struggled to secure its preferred candidates for the managerial position.
The Belgian went on to lead Bayern to the Bundesliga title in his debut season, restoring the club to the summit of German football.
His appointment had initially come as a surprise, with Bayern reportedly paying Burnley £10 million ($13 million) to release him from his contract.
Kompany had guided Burnley to promotion to the Premier League but was unable to keep the club in the top flight, with the side suffering relegation after just one season.
Before appointing him, Bayern had reportedly pursued several other candidates, including Xabi Alonso, Julian Nagelsmann, Oliver Glasner and Ralf Rangnick, but failed to secure their services.
Bayern, who are leading the Bundesliga standings, are scheduled to visit Freiburg on Saturday.
