Lionel Messi scored his 930th career goal with a stunning free-kick, but Inter Miami were held to a 2-2 draw by San Diego FC in Major League Soccer on Sunday night.
San Diego took the lead in the 12th minute when Anders Dreyer latched onto a through ball from Jeppe Tverskov before calmly chipping the ball over Inter Miami goalkeeper Dayne St. Clair.
Messi restored parity 12 minutes later after he was fouled just outside the penalty area. The Argentine curled a left-footed free-kick around the wall, with the ball clipping the post before crossing the line beyond goalkeeper CJ dos Santos.
The strike was Messi’s 20th MLS goal of the 2026 season and the 75th free-kick goal of his career.
According to football transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, who posted about the milestone on X on Sunday, Messi had reached 930 career goals, including 75 from free-kicks and 101 for Inter Miami.
The goal also marked Messi’s 101st for Inter Miami, just four days after he scored his 100th for the club in their Campeones Cup victory over Cruz Azul.
Inter Miami then completed the turnaround in the 74th minute when Luis Suárez found the net to put the hosts 2-1 ahead.
San Diego refused to leave empty-handed, however, as Dreyer scored his second goal of the night in the 82nd minute to level the match and secure a point for the visitors.
The result extended Inter Miami’s run to four consecutive MLS draws. The club now has 12 wins, four losses and 10 draws, giving it 46 points.
At 39, Messi continues to add to his remarkable career scoring tally while remaining a key figure in Inter Miami’s MLS campaign.
