The Edo State House of Assembly on Monday formally impeached its suspended Speaker, Blessing Agbebaku, who represents Owan West Constituency I.
Agbebaku had on Monday, August 17, 2026, resigned as Speaker of the House following the controversy that led to his suspension.
However, the House rejected the resignation and formally impeached him during plenary on Monday. Yekini Idaiye, representing Akoko-Edo I, had earlier been elected Speaker in his place.
The new Speaker stressed that Agbebaku was impeached and did not resign from office.
The motion for Agbebaku’s formal impeachment was moved by the Majority Leader, Sunny Ojiezele, and seconded by Ahmed Waziri, representing Etsako Central Constituency.
Idaiye, while directing Agbebaku to return all government property in his possession, warned that security agencies would be called in if the former Speaker failed to comply with the directive.
“This is to let the public know that the Edo State House of Assembly has formally impeached the suspended Speaker, Blessing Agbebaku.
“And the impeached Speaker is to return all government property in his possession, and security agencies would be engaged if the former Speaker fails to comply with the directive of the House,” Idaiye said.
The development comes eight days after the controversy surrounding Agbebaku’s suspension and the leadership of the House began.
According to The Telegraph, the House subsequently moved to convert Agbebaku’s suspension into an impeachment after his purported resignation was not formally presented or documented.
Idaiye said the impeachment notice had been signed by 17 lawmakers and formally presented by the Majority Leader during the previous Monday’s plenary.
He explained that the decision to proceed with impeachment followed the failure to officially present and document Agbebaku’s resignation notice several days after his suspension.
