The Kano State House of Assembly has passed the Kano State Private and Voluntary Institutions Board (Amendment) Bill, 2026, introducing measures aimed at strengthening the regulation and administration of private and voluntary educational institutions across the state.
The bill was approved during Monday’s plenary following the adoption of the report of the House Committee on Education, which conducted public hearings and consulted key stakeholders before presenting its recommendations to lawmakers.
Speaking after the bill’s passage, Speaker of the House, Ismail Falgore, commended members for their contributions throughout the legislative process, describing the amendment as a major step toward improving oversight and governance of private and voluntary schools in Kano State.
A key provision of the amendment creates the office of the Executive Secretary to enhance the board’s operational efficiency and administrative effectiveness.
The legislation also requires private and voluntary schools to obtain regulatory approval before increasing tuition or other charges, a measure intended to protect parents and guardians from arbitrary fee hikes while ensuring greater transparency and accountability in the sector.
The amendment follows extensive stakeholder engagement through public hearings organised by the House Committee on Education, with lawmakers incorporating recommendations from the consultations before giving the bill final approval.
