Alejandro Garnacho has completed a season-long loan move to Aston Villa from Premier League rivals Chelsea, the club confirmed on Thursday.
The Argentina international becomes Villa’s fourth signing of the summer transfer window, following the arrivals of Johan Manzambi, Joao Gomes and Modou Keba Cisse as the Europa League champions strengthen their squad ahead of the new campaign.
Villa manager Unai Emery welcomed the signing, describing Garnacho as a talented young player who fits into the club’s ambitions.
“We are delighted with Alejandro. He is so talented, young, and he showed us his wish to help our project. We are really happy,” Emery said.
Garnacho’s move comes after reports that Chelsea’s new manager, Xabi Alonso, informed the winger that he would not be guaranteed regular playing time at Stamford Bridge this season.
The 22-year-old joined Chelsea from Manchester United but endured a difficult first campaign in west London, scoring eight goals in 43 appearances across all competitions.
His departure follows Chelsea’s club-record £117 million ($156 million) acquisition of Aston Villa forward Morgan Rogers, which was completed on Tuesday.
Garnacho will now look to revive his form at Villa Park as Emery’s side prepare for another season competing on multiple fronts.
