The House of Representatives has passed the bill on the establishment of state police.

The resolution followed a vote during Thursday’s plenary session, presided over by Speaker Tajudeen Abbas.

According to Abbas, 288 lawmakers voted in favour of the bill, while four opposed it. The vote came a day after members dedicated Thursday’s sitting to debating the proposed legislation.

Lawmakers voted by a show of hands after the Speaker explained that the electronic voting system was not functional at the time.

Meanwhile, the Senate has also advanced the bill, passing it through second reading. It subsequently referred the legislation to the Senate Committee on Constitutional Review for further consideration.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio noted that a final vote on the bill would be conducted at a future sitting.
