Kebbi Assembly elects Salihu Dangoje as new speaker

New Speaker of Kebbi State House of Assembly, Salihu Maikasuwa-Dangoje.
Salihu Maikasuwa-Dangoje, member representing Sakaba Constituency, has been elected Speaker of the Kebbi State House of Assembly.

Dangoje was unanimously elected during plenary on Wednesday at the Assembly Complex in Birnin Kebbi.

The Clerk of the House, Sulaiman Shamaki, who presided over the sitting, said the election followed the vacancy created by the death of the former Speaker, Mohammed Usman-Zuru.

He explained that the process was conducted in line with Section 92(1) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), which empowers a State House of Assembly to elect a Speaker from among its members.

The nomination of Dangoje was moved by Adamu Birnin-Yauri (APC–Ngaski) and seconded by Lawal Haruna (APC–Fakai).

Birnin-Yauri, while presenting the motion, said the new Speaker’s 11 years of legislative experience and previous leadership roles made him well suited for the position.

Following his election, the Clerk administered the oath of office on the new Speaker.

In his acceptance speech, Dangoje thanked members for the confidence reposed in him and pledged inclusive, transparent and purposeful leadership.

He assured lawmakers of his commitment to strengthening unity within the Assembly and enhancing legislative efficiency in the state.

Dangoje also pledged that the Assembly would continue to enact people-oriented laws and intensify its oversight functions to promote good governance and sustainable development in Kebbi State.

His emergence follows the death of former Speaker Mohammed Usman-Zuru, who died on April 7 in Cairo, Egypt, while receiving medical treatment.
