The African Action Congress (AAC) has announced the resignation of human rights activist and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore as the party’s National Chairman.

The party made the announcement in a statement on Tuesday, shortly after Sowore emerged as the AAC presidential candidate for the 2027 general elections during the party’s primaries held in Abuja.

According to the statement, Samuel Ajeigbe has been appointed as the new National Chairman of the party.

“Omoyele Sowore has officially stepped down as the National Chairman of the African Action Congress.

“The party hereby welcomes Samuel Ajeigbe as the new National Chairman of our great party,” the statement read.

The development marks a significant leadership transition within the AAC as the party intensifies preparations for the 2027 elections.

Sowore’s resignation came just hours after he secured the party’s presidential ticket through a unanimous endorsement by delegates and party leaders during the primaries in the Federal Capital Territory.

The activist was subsequently presented with the party’s flag amid cheers from supporters and delegates drawn from across the country.

In his acceptance speech, Sowore said the AAC was founded to build a “new Nigeria” free from corruption, insecurity, and poor governance.

He praised party members for their resilience despite political pressure and economic hardship.

Sowore also criticised the ruling All Progressives Congress, accusing it of incompetence and attempting to manipulate public perception ahead of the 2027 elections.

He dismissed claims that over 10 million members participated in President Bola Tinubu’s presidential primary, describing the figures as unrealistic.

“There is no way the APC can have 10 million members,” Sowore said.

“I can guarantee you that the APC cannot boast of 10,000 members.”
