Five dead, 10 rescued as building collapses in Abuja

At least five people have been confirmed dead, while 10 others were rescued alive after a three-storey building under construction collapsed in the Durumi 3 area near Gudu Market in Abuja on Saturday morning.

The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) confirmed the incident in a statement issued by the Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and Social Media to the FCT Minister, Lere Olayinka.

According to the statement, rescue operations are ongoing as emergency responders continue efforts to locate and evacuate additional victims believed to be trapped beneath the rubble at the construction site in the Gudu district.

“At least five persons have been confirmed dead while 10 others were rescued alive after a three-storey building under construction collapsed in the Durumi 3 area, near Gudu Market, Abuja, on Saturday morning,” the statement read.

It added that rescue efforts were still underway as emergency teams worked under difficult conditions to reach those trapped.

The FCTA said the Mandate Secretary of the Health Services and Environment Secretariat, Dr Adedolapo Fasawe, who visited the scene, disclosed that the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, had ordered immediate medical attention for all victims.

Fasawe said Wike directed that all casualties be given free medical treatment, adding that emergency response teams had been fully activated to manage the situation.

She noted that rescue and medical personnel were working under challenging conditions as search operations continued at the collapsed structure.

Emergency responders, including officials of the Federal Fire Service, security agencies, health workers, and local volunteers, were seen combing through the debris as anxious residents gathered at the scene.
