Some yet-to-be-identified gunmen, suspected to be cultists, have killed Chief Ikwuka Okoye, also known as Anumili, the President-General of Ogidi Community in Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State.
The attack, which occurred late on Friday at the School Field in Ogidi, also claimed the life of another man whose identity is yet to be confirmed. Eyewitnesses say the incident is linked to revenge by a rival cult group following the arrest and death of their leader by local security operatives.
One source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, described the attack: “Daredevil gunmen invaded our community last night. By the time they were done, the town’s President-General, Sir Ikwuka Okoye, and another victim, who happened to be his relative, lay dead on the floor.”
The Anambra State Police Command confirmed the incident on Saturday. Spokesman SP Tochukwu Ikenga said investigations are ongoing.
“The Anambra State Police Command regrets the murder of the President-General of Ogidi community and one other person. The incident, which occurred on the evening of February 6, 2026, is allegedly linked to the recent capture and killing of a notorious cultist within the community,” Ikenga stated.
He added that police operatives swiftly secured the scene and are working with eyewitness accounts and other intelligence to identify and apprehend the perpetrators.
“The command assures the public that all efforts are being intensified to bring those responsible to justice. Residents are urged to remain calm and cooperate with the police as investigations continue. Further developments will be communicated in due course,” Ikenga said.
The killing has sparked outrage in the Ogidi community, with residents and local officials condemning the attack and mourning the loss of the duly elected community leader.
