Abdulrasheed Maina, former chairman of the now-defunct Pension Reform Task Force, slumped on Tuesday while attempting to access his office and is currently receiving medical care in Abuja. The incident, confirmed on Wednesday by his media assistant Emmanuel Ekwe, was linked to complications from an untreated knee injury.
According to the statement, the injury caused Maina to lose his balance, resulting in a fall that left him hitting his head on a staircase. Medical personnel on site administered first aid before rushing him to a private hospital for urgent treatment.
“Dr. Maina is currently under intensive observation, and his condition is being closely monitored by doctors. Should his health not stabilise, arrangements for an air ambulance evacuation may be considered,” Ekwe said. He added that the family is appealing for privacy and prayers during this critical period.
Maina is widely known for his controversial tenure as head of the Presidential Task Force on Pension Reforms and the subsequent high-profile corruption case. In November 2021, he was convicted by a Federal High Court in Abuja for money-laundering involving N2.1 billion linked to pension funds and sentenced to eight years in prison. The Court of Appeal upheld the sentence in May 2023, confirming the forfeiture of assets tied to the case.
He was released from Kuje Correctional Centre on February 25, 2025, after serving part of his sentence, following statutory remission for good conduct. Since then, Maina has largely stayed out of the public eye, though his activities remain under scrutiny due to the scale and impact of the pension scandal.
