Samsung on Tuesday launched its first triple-folding smartphone, the Galaxy Z TriFold, a special-edition device priced at $2,443, more than twice the cost of the new iPhone 17, putting it well beyond the reach of the average consumer. The phone will go on sale December 12.

The ultra-thin device unfolds to a 10-inch (25.4 cm) display, offering “increased possibilities for creating and working,” according to the South Korean tech giant. While the triple-fold function is not a world first—China’s Huawei released a similar phone last year—Samsung hopes the innovation will help differentiate it in a competitive smartphone market.

Weighing 309 grams (10.9 ounces) and measuring less than 0.2 inches at its thinnest point, the Galaxy Z TriFold is offered exclusively in black. It also features generative artificial intelligence capabilities, providing real-time assistance via screen or camera sharing.

Alex Lim, executive vice president at Samsung Electronics, emphasized that the device is a “special edition” and “not intended for mass sales.”

The launch comes amid signs that Apple is on track to surpass Samsung as the world’s leading smartphone maker for the first time in 14 years. According to research firm Counterpoint, Apple’s global smartphone share is projected to reach 19.4 percent in 2025, compared with Samsung’s 18.7 percent. Apple is also rumored to be planning a foldable iPhone as early as next year.
