Navy intercepts boat carrying 4,000 litres of suspected diesel in Lagos

Seized product by the Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) Beecroft
The Nigerian Navy has intercepted a fibre boat transporting approximately 4,000 litres of suspected Automotive Gas Oil (AGO) in Lagos waters.

The operation, conducted in the early hours of Saturday, October 11, 2025, near Commodore Pool in the Atlas Cove area, was led by personnel of the Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) Beecroft.

Speaking at a press briefing on Thursday, Executive Officer of NNS Beecroft, Captain Idongesit Udoessien, confirmed the interception on behalf of the Commander, Commodore Paul Nimmyel.

He said the Navy’s Falcon Eye maritime surveillance system enabled real-time tracking of the vessel, which was intercepted by a patrol team stationed at Tarkwa Bay. The suspects abandoned the boat and fled upon sighting naval personnel.

The seized product has been handed over to the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Lagos State Command, for further investigation.

Captain Udoessien emphasized that the operation aligns with the directive of the Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ogalla, to maintain a strong and credible presence across the Lagos maritime domain.

“This is part of our ongoing efforts to eliminate economic sabotage and maritime crime,” he said, warning perpetrators of oil theft and other illegal activities to desist or face the full weight of the law.

He added that NNS Beecroft will continue to intensify surveillance, patrols, and intelligence-led operations to secure Nigeria’s waterways and support economic activities.
