Police officer arrested over death of three-month-old in Anambra

The Anambra State Police Command has arrested an officer in connection with the alleged death of a three-month-old baby in Okija, Ihiala Local Government Area of the state.

In a statement issued on Friday, the Command’s spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed that the officer, whose identity has been withheld pending investigation, has been identified and taken into custody.

Ikenga said the Command has launched a full-scale investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident to establish the facts and ensure that justice is served.

According to him, the officer is currently undergoing interrogation and other administrative procedures in line with the disciplinary processes of the Nigeria Police Force.

“The Anambra State Police Command confirms that the police officer allegedly connected with the unfortunate incident that resulted in the death of a three-month-old baby in Okija has been identified and taken into custody.

“The Command has commenced a full-scale investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident to ascertain the facts and ensure that justice is served.

“The Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, while expressing deep regret over the unfortunate development, commiserates with the family of the deceased child and assures the public that the Command will remain transparent and professional in handling the matter.

“The officer involved is currently undergoing interrogation and other administrative procedures in line with the Nigeria Police Force disciplinary processes,” the statement read.

The Command also urged members of the public to remain calm and avoid actions that could heighten tension, assuring that no one found culpable would be shielded from justice.

It added that further updates on the outcome of the investigation would be communicated in due course.
