Liverpool’s perfect start to the Premier League season was brought to a crashing halt on Saturday, as they suffered a dramatic 2-1 defeat to Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park.
The result means Palace are now the only unbeaten side in the Premier League, extending their club-record unbeaten run to 18 matches across all competitions, including three against Liverpool.
The reigning English champions, who had relied on late goals to win their opening five league games, were finally punished for another disjointed performance.
Ismaila Sarr opened the scoring early for Palace, capitalising on Liverpool’s failure to clear a corner.
Liverpool seemed poised for yet another late escape when Federico Chiesa equalised in the 87th minute, sweeping home a loose ball inside the box.
But this time, the late drama went against them.
Eddie Nketiah netted a composed winner deep into stoppage time, sparking wild celebrations from the home crowd.
The victory lifts Palace to second place, just three points behind Liverpool at the top of the table.
Arsenal will have the chance to reclaim second and close the gap to two points when they visit Newcastle on Sunday.
