The World Health Organization (WHO) announced on Friday that mpox no longer constitutes a global public health emergency, citing a sustained decline in cases and deaths in the Democratic Republic of Congo and other affected regions.
“Lifting the emergency declaration does not mean the threat has disappeared, nor that our response will cease,” said WHO Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus at a press conference. The decision ends the UN health agency’s highest alert level, which had been in place for over a year.
