The National Executive Committee (NEC) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has officially confirmed Umar Damagum as the party’s substantive National Chairman.
The decision was reached on Monday during the party’s 102nd NEC meeting held in Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory.
The meeting was briefly paused for the swearing-in ceremony, which was conducted by the PDP’s National Legal Adviser, Kamaldeen Ajibade.
In his acceptance speech, Damagum expressed gratitude to members of the National Working Committee (NWC) for their support, which he said had made his responsibilities more manageable. He also thanked the NEC for acknowledging his efforts in repositioning the party, which led to his confirmation.
Damagum was first appointed as acting national chairman in March 2023 following the suspension of former chairman Senator Iyorchia Ayu, a decision later upheld by the court. Prior to that, he served as the PDP’s National Deputy Chairman (North).
In a communiqué issued after the meeting, the NEC stated that Damagum’s confirmation reflects the committee’s appreciation for the NWC’s work under his leadership, particularly in stabilising the party.
“NEC hereby ratifies and confirms the appointment of Umar Damagum as the substantive National Chairman of the party with effect from today, Monday, August 25, 2025, until the National Convention scheduled to be held in Ibadan, Oyo State, on November 15 and 16, 2025,” the communiqué read.
