I’m landlord in ADC, opposition coalition won’t last — Abejide

Leke Abejide
Leke Abejide, the lawmaker representing Yagba East/Yagba West/Mopamuro Federal Constituency of Kogi State in the House of Representatives, has predicted the imminent collapse of the opposition coalition that recently adopted the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as its political platform.

Speaking on The Morning Brief, a Channels Television programme on Friday, Abejide declared that the coalition’s failure to secure a single seat in the August 16 by-elections signaled the beginning of its downfall.

“You can see that the coalition collapsed last Saturday. All over the country, they couldn’t even win one seat. That was the beginning of the end,” he said. “By early next month, the coalition will collapse completely. You can’t come to someone’s house, hijack it, and expect the owner—no matter how docile—to sit back and watch.”

Describing himself as the “landlord” of the ADC, Abejide claimed credit for sustaining the party’s relevance over the years.

“I didn’t found the party, but I’m the one who brought it to where it is today. I’ve never decamped to any major party. I’ve used the ADC to contest and win my elections, and I’ve also brought others into the National Assembly and state assemblies,” he said.

The lawmaker further argued that many prominent figures in the coalition were unfamiliar with the ADC before adopting it as a platform for the 2027 general elections. He noted that neither former Vice President Atiku Abubakar nor former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi are card-carrying members of the ADC.

While acknowledging that former Senate President David Mark and former Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola had previously been members of the ADC, Abejide stressed that they held no leadership roles in the party before the coalition’s formation.

The opposition coalition had, in July 2025, formally adopted the ADC as its vehicle for contesting the 2027 elections. Mark and Aregbesola were subsequently named interim national chairman and secretary of the party, respectively.

Other notable figures in the coalition include former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai; former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi; Senator Dino Melaye; former Minister of Youth and Sports Solomon Dalung; former Benue Governor Senator Gabriel Suswam; and media personality Dele Momodu.

Also part of the alliance are Senator Ireti Kingibe of the Labour Party, former Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives Emeka Ihedioha, and former Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar (retd).

Meanwhile, the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has dismissed the opposition coalition, maintaining that any alliance formed to challenge President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid in 2027 is bound to fail.
