The Acting National Chairman of the Labour Party (LP), Senator Nenadi Usman, has dismissed concerns over recent defections from the party, insisting it remains strong and committed to offering Nigerians a credible alternative to what she called the “rudderless and visionless” APC-led government.
Speaking to journalists on Saturday in Kaduna, Usman urged Nigerians not to lose faith in the LP, which she said is focused on restoring national dignity and delivering people-centered governance.
She described the current APC administration as the most economically devastating in Nigeria’s history, saying the level of hardship faced by citizens is unprecedented.
“The APC has failed Nigerians. The suffering is widespread and severe,” she said.
Reacting to defections from the LP to the APC, Usman condemned the trend as “morally indefensible and legally questionable.”
“It is disheartening to see politicians jump ship after winning elections on the LP platform, only to defect for personal gain,” she added.
Despite the exits, she maintained that the LP remains unshaken and continues to enjoy grassroots support. Usman also admitted the party had made missteps in candidate selection but noted that those who defected never truly believed in the LP’s vision.
“Their departure has brought clarity and strengthened internal unity,” she said. “Going forward, we’ll be more deliberate in selecting candidates who align with our mission of building a new Nigeria.”
She urged party members to set aside differences and support the LP’s forthcoming nationwide membership revalidation, congresses, and national convention—all sanctioned by the party’s National Executive Council.
