Arsenal have confirmed the signing of Swedish striker Viktor Gyökeres from Portuguese champions Sporting Lisbon on a five-year deal, the Premier League club announced on Saturday.

While the official fee remains undisclosed, multiple British outlets report that Arsenal agreed to a £55 million upfront fee, with an additional £8 million in performance-related add-ons, for the prolific 27-year-old forward.

Manager Mikel Arteta welcomed Gyökeres’ arrival, describing it as a key addition ahead of the new season.

“We’re absolutely delighted to welcome Viktor Gyökeres to the club,” Arteta said. “The consistency he has shown in his performances and availability have been outstanding, and his goal contributions speak for themselves.”

Strengthening the front line was a top priority for Arsenal this summer as they look to finally end their long wait for a Premier League title. The Gunners have finished runners-up for three consecutive seasons, falling 10 points short of champions Liverpool last term while scoring 17 fewer goals.

With no consistent number nine throughout much of the campaign, Gabriel Jesus and Kai Havertz rotated up front before injuries disrupted their availability. In the closing stages, midfielder Mikel Merino was even deployed as an emergency striker.

Gyökeres arrives in North London after a sensational season with Sporting, whom he joined from Coventry City in 2023 for around £20 million. He netted 97 goals and provided 28 assists in 102 appearances for the Lisbon club.

His 2023–24 campaign was particularly remarkable: 54 goals in 52 appearances across all competitions, playing a central role in Sporting’s league and cup double. Notably, he scored a Champions League hat-trick against Manchester City, underlining his ability to perform on the biggest stage.

The Sweden international, who had a brief stint with Brighton & Hove Albion earlier in his career, will wear the number 14 shirt at Arsenal and is set to join the squad on their pre-season tour of Asia.

Gyökeres becomes Arsenal’s fifth signing of the summer transfer window, joining Noni Madueke, Kepa Arrizabalaga, and midfielders Christian Nørgaard and Martin Zubimendi as Arteta reshapes his squad for another title push.
