Nigeria dominated the individual accolades at the just-concluded 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), capping off their triumph with a dramatic 3-2 comeback victory over hosts Morocco in the final.
The Super Falcons staged one of the most memorable turnarounds in the tournament’s history, rallying from a 2-0 deficit at halftime to snatch victory in Rabat. The win secured Nigeria’s 10th WAFCON title, an achievement fittingly dubbed “Mission X.”
The comeback was led by captain Rasheedat Ajibade, who was named Player of the Tournament. Though she scored only once, Ajibade’s leadership and tireless performance throughout the competition, including three Woman of the Match displays, proved vital to Nigeria’s campaign. Her resilience, hunger, and drive set the tone for the Super Falcons’ title run.
Goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie also earned plaudits, picking up the Best Goalkeeper of the Tournament award. The Brighton FC shot-stopper was instrumental between the sticks, conceding just three goals across the tournament—two in the final and one penalty in the semi-final against South Africa. Until the final, she had not been beaten in open play.
Despite finishing as runners-up, Morocco’s Ghizlane Chebbak claimed the Golden Boot, netting five goals—including her team’s opener in the final. Her sharp finishing made her one of the standout performers of the tournament.
South Africa, who were eliminated by Nigeria in the semi-finals, received the Fair Play Award, recognizing their discipline and sportsmanship throughout the competition.
Interim head coach Justin Madugu was named Coach of the Tournament, a reward for guiding Nigeria to their 10th continental title. His calm leadership and tactical adjustments were crucial to the Super Falcons’ resilience and eventual triumph.
While questions had been raised about Nigeria’s form in the early stages, the team peaked at the right time, cementing their legacy as Africa’s most successful women’s national team.
Morocco will host the next edition of the WAFCON in 2025, as anticipation builds for another thrilling chapter in African women’s football.
