The High Court 1 in Lafia, Nasarawa State, has sentenced one Ahmadu Yaro to 21 years in prison for the rape of a three-month-old baby in the Adogi community of Lafia Local Government Area.
Yaro was arrested in May 2020 by the Nasarawa State Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) following reports of sexual assault and severe injury to the infant.
The case, filed as NSD/LF191c/2020, was prosecuted by the Nasarawa State Government.
Delivering judgment on Monday, Justice Aisha Mohammed Bashir — who also serves as Chief Judge of Nasarawa State — condemned the crime as “barbaric” and a “direct attack on the moral conscience of society.”
She imposed the 21-year sentence to serve as a deterrent to others.
Speaking on the judgment, the Chief Judge’s Senior Special Assistant on Protocol and Media, Enoch Ali Maku, confirmed that Yaro had been on trial for the past five years.
He noted that the court found Yaro guilty beyond reasonable doubt, leading to his conviction and sentencing.
Maku added that the convict has 30 days to appeal the judgment if he chooses to do so.
