Police rescue two abandoned babies in Abuja

The Federal Capital Territory Police Command has rescued two abandoned babies in separate incidents in the Kurudu and Gwagwalada areas of Abuja.

The Command’s Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, disclosed this in a statement on Friday, saying both incidents occurred on Wednesday, September 2, 2026.

Adeh said the first incident occurred at about 5:30 p.m. around Obodo Street, Kurudu, where a resident identified as Innocent heard a baby crying and discovered a baby boy wrapped in a cloth and abandoned in a carton box.

She said police officers from the Kurudu Division, alongside personnel from the Juveniles and Women Care Department, were immediately deployed to the scene and rescued the child.

According to her, the baby was taken to a nearby hospital for medical assessment and is currently in stable condition, while investigations are ongoing to determine the circumstances surrounding the abandonment.

In a separate incident later that day, Adeh said a baby girl was rescued in Gwagwalada after a resident, identified as Ibrahim, heard her crying outside his gate at about 9:40 p.m.

She said Ibrahim, with the assistance of other concerned residents, rescued the child and reported the incident at the Gwagwalada Police Station at about 10:15 p.m.

The police spokesperson said the baby was taken to the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital by officers from the Juveniles and Women Care Department for medical examination and is currently receiving care pending her handover to the Social Welfare Development Department.

Adeh said efforts were ongoing to establish the circumstances surrounding the abandonment and identify the babies’ mothers or other relatives.

She commended Innocent, Ibrahim and other members of the communities for their prompt intervention and for alerting the police.

Adeh urged anyone with information that could help identify the mothers or relatives of the abandoned babies to report to the nearest police station or contact the Command’s Public Relations Officer.
