Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has declared that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) remains a strong and united institution in the South-West, and is unshaken by talks of an emerging political coalition.
Speaking to journalists on Friday after a meeting of the South-West PDP Caucus at the Soji Adagunodo House in Ibadan, Governor Makinde dismissed suggestions that the new coalition poses a threat to the PDP, insisting that the party remains the most credible alternative for Nigerians.
“We want the world to know that the PDP in the South-West is united. We are together, and this talk about a coalition is not a threat to us,” he said.
Makinde questioned the credibility and consistency of those forming the coalition, pointing out that many of them have moved between political parties without clear ideological direction.
“Who are these people in the coalition? They’ve been in other parties before—whether PDP or APC. What exactly are their antecedents? Are we to believe that each time they switch parties, they’ve suddenly changed or have something new to offer? These are questions Nigerians should ask.”
Using a metaphor to underscore the PDP’s commitment to internal reform, Makinde likened the party to a building with a leaking roof, saying true leadership means staying to fix problems—not running away.
“This Soji Adagunodo House belongs to the South-West PDP. If the roof leaks, responsible leaders don’t abandon it—they fix it. That’s our position. We will remain within the PDP and strengthen it, because we are committed to the people we serve.”
He assured that the PDP has the internal mechanisms to resolve its challenges and will continue to do so constructively and responsibly.
“PDP is not just a party—it’s an institution. We have our own ways of handling issues, and when the time comes, we’ll do just that. I assure you, we’ll emerge stronger.”
Governor Makinde’s remarks reinforce the position of South-West PDP leaders to remain loyal to the party and work collaboratively to resolve any internal disagreements as the party prepares for future elections.
