The Olubadan of Ibadanland, His Imperial Majesty Oba Owolabi Olakulehin, has passed away at the age of 90.

A family source confirmed to The Telegraph that the revered monarch died in the early hours of Monday. His passing came amid celebrations marking his 90th birthday and the first anniversary of his ascension to the throne.

Oba Olakulehin, who succeeded the late Oba Lekan Balogun, was officially installed as the 43rd Olubadan of Ibadanland on June 14, 2024. He celebrated his 90th birthday on Saturday, July 5.

Just days before his death, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu had issued a heartfelt message congratulating the monarch on both milestones. The president described Oba Olakulehin as “a foremost traditional ruler, custodian of culture and tradition, and a revered elder statesman who devoted his life to serving humanity and preserving Yoruba heritage.”

“At 90, His Majesty embodied a rare blend of age-old wisdom, enduring leadership, and decades of selfless dedication to community development and nation-building,” President Tinubu’s statement read.

Governor Makinde pays tribute

Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of the Olubadan. Speaking while receiving a delegation from the late monarch’s family, Makinde assured them of the state government’s full support and commitment to giving Oba Olakulehin a befitting burial.

“I commiserate with the family and with all of us. The government will stand with you and fulfill all our responsibilities, including ensuring that Kabiyesi is buried with the honour he deserves,” Makinde said.

The governor also shared a personal reflection: “Coincidentally, today marks the 13th year since my own father passed. I understand the pain. For the family, I pray for strength. We always wish our loved ones could stay longer, but God has designed our bodies for a set time.”

The family delegation included Chief Bayo Oyero, former president-general of the Central Council of Ibadan Indigenes (CCII) and Aare Mayegun of Ibadanland; Osuolale Owolabi Olakulehin, the late monarch’s younger brother; and Aremo Olasumbo Owolabi, his son.

Oba Owolabi Olakulehin leaves behind a legacy of dignity, cultural stewardship, and unwavering service to his people.
