U.S. President Donald Trump has called on Iran to return to diplomatic negotiations, warning that the Islamic Republic is not gaining the upper hand in its escalating conflict with Israel.
Speaking to reporters at the G7 summit in Canada on Monday, Trump said Iran had expressed interest in de-escalating the hostilities and suggested that officials in Tehran are open to renewed dialogue.
“They have to make a deal, and it’s painful for both parties,” Trump said. “But I’d say Iran is not winning this war, and they should talk—and they should talk immediately, before it’s too late.”
According to USA News Today, the president indicated that backchannel signals from Iran show a willingness to engage in talks, as international pressure mounts for a diplomatic solution to the crisis.
The latest remarks come amid rapidly intensifying violence in the Middle East. Tensions surged on Friday when over 200 Israeli fighter jets carried out coordinated strikes on multiple targets in Iran, including military installations, nuclear facilities, and high-ranking personnel. Among those reportedly killed were senior generals and nuclear scientists.
In response, Iran launched waves of missile and drone attacks on Israeli cities and military sites, pushing the region closer to a broader war.
The Biden administration has repeatedly called for restraint and a return to diplomacy, warning that continued escalation could destabilize the entire region. Trump echoed that sentiment, insisting that diplomacy remains the only viable off-ramp from the crisis.
“It’s in everyone’s interest to stop the bloodshed and talk. There’s no winning in this,” Trump said.
