Prominent Islamic cleric Sheikh Ahmad Gumi has been barred by Saudi Arabian authorities from performing the 2025 Hajj despite holding a valid visa and arriving in the Kingdom as part of Nigeria’s official religious delegation.
Gumi, known for his controversial views on national and international issues, confirmed the development in a statement titled “My Hajj 2025!” posted on his Facebook page on Monday.
The cleric revealed that Saudi immigration officials turned him away upon arrival at Medina airport last Saturday. He suggested the decision was politically motivated, citing discomfort from Saudi authorities over his outspoken opinions.
“For some obvious reasons related to my views on world politics, the Saudi authorities are uncomfortable with my presence at Hajj, despite having granted me the visa,” he said.
Gumi expressed gratitude to Nigerian authorities, who have pledged to address the matter with their Saudi counterparts. “That is the value of our cherished freedom and democracy,” he added.
He said he would now focus on his health and farming activities and urged continued prayers for the safety of all pilgrims, as well as peace and prosperity for Nigeria.
Reflecting on his situation, Gumi quoted Qur’an 2:196: “And accomplish the Hajj and Umrah for Allah. But if you are prevented, then [offer] what is easy of sacrificial animals. And do not shave your heads until the offering reaches its place.”
The cleric was reportedly part of a delegation of Islamic scholars sponsored by the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON) and traveled aboard Umza Air alongside other clerics.
