Former President Muhammadu Buhari has said he left office with the same physical assets he had when he assumed leadership on May 29, 2015.
This was disclosed by his media aide, Garba Shehu, in a statement on Wednesday following a visit by members of the Progressive Governors’ Forum (PGF) to Buhari’s residence in Kaduna during the Eid-el-Fitr holiday.
According to Shehu, Buhari encouraged the governors elected on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to adopt a citizen-focused approach to governance, stressing that “leadership presents both a challenge and an opportunity,” and that finding the right balance would significantly advance national progress.
The former president expressed confidence in the strides being made by APC governors and called for continued dedication to the country’s development. He also thanked the Tinubu administration for renovating his Kaduna home, noting that while the exterior remained unchanged, the internal improvements were substantial.
Welcoming the governors, Buhari said he was familiar with many of them, while others were new faces, and expressed gratitude for their visit.
Speaking on behalf of the PGF, Chairman and Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma praised Buhari’s legacy and contribution to democracy. He described the former president as a symbol of integrity and national unity.
“Many of us recall with pride the principled role you played in the founding of the APC. That legacy continues to shape our party’s identity,” Uzodimma said. “You remain the only opposition candidate in Nigeria’s history to have defeated an incumbent president. Not only did you win, but you governed with calm resolve and handed over power with honor to another APC leader.”
Uzodimma highlighted key achievements of Buhari’s administration, including gains in national security, infrastructure, social investment programmes, and agricultural initiatives such as the Anchor Borrowers’ Scheme, which bolstered food security.
He also noted Buhari’s recent public support for President Bola Tinubu, calling it a strong symbol of party unity and continuity. “Your public endorsement of President Tinubu reaffirmed your place as a pillar of our movement,” he added.
Concluding his remarks, Uzodimma appealed to Buhari to remain a guiding figure within the party as it works to deepen progressive governance and maintain its hold on national leadership.
