The Senate has confirmed Sylvester Nwakuche as the new Controller General of the Nigeria Correctional Service (NCoS), following President Bola Tinubu’s appointment on December 13, 2024, after the retirement of Haliru Nababa.
The confirmation came after the Senate Committee on Interior, led by Senator Adams Oshiomhole, presented its report for consideration. Lawmakers unanimously approved the appointment during Tuesday’s plenary.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio tasked Nwakuche with securing correctional facilities across the country and expressed hope that under his leadership, the frequent jailbreaks that have plagued Nigeria would end. His remarks followed a recent escape at the Koton Karfe Medium Security Custodial Centre in Kogi State, where 12 inmates fled, and a correctional officer was killed.
