President Bola Tinubu has appointed Matthew Kukah, the Catholic Bishop of Sokoto Diocese, as the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council for the Federal University of Applied Sciences, Kachia, Kaduna State.
The appointment was announced in a statement by Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, on Monday, titled ‘President Tinubu Appoints Bishop Kukah as Pro-Chancellor of Federal University of Applied Sciences, Kachia.’
This appointment comes just 33 days after President Tinubu directed the federal government to take over Nok University in Kachia, Kaduna State, and convert it into a federal institution. As part of this transformation, the university has been renamed the Federal University of Applied Sciences, Kachia.
In addition to Bishop Kukah’s appointment, the President also named key principal officers for the university: Prof. Qurix Barnabas as Vice Chancellor, Sanusi Adamu as Registrar, Ibrahim Dalhat as Bursar, and Prof. Daniel Abubakar as University Librarian.
Furthermore, Tinubu approved the appointment of several members to the university’s Governing Council, including Mr. Thomas Etuh (North Central), Chief Fabian Nwaora (South-East), Prof. Femi Taiwo (South-West), and Zarah Bukar (North-East).
According to the Presidency, “All the appointees were selected for their distinguished careers, leadership experience, and commitment to advancing education in Nigeria.”
In his message, President Tinubu urged the new appointees to leverage their collective expertise to position the university as a center of academic excellence and research, in line with his administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda. He also called on them to provide visionary leadership and build a strong foundation as the university prepares to admit its first cohort of students in September 2025.
