Nottingham Forest defender Ola Aina has been recognized as the top ball-winner in defensive areas across Europe’s top five leagues, according to statistics from WhoScored.

The 28-year-old full-back has been a standout performer for Forest this season, playing over 2,500 minutes across all competitions and delivering his most impressive campaign at the top level.

“Aina has won the ball back in defensive areas 13 times more than any other player, placing him at the top of the list across Europe,” the club said in a report on Tuesday.

Aina’s defensive excellence has been pivotal in Forest’s strong backline, significantly contributing to goalkeeper Matz Sels’ 12 Premier League clean sheets, the highest in the division this season and the joint-most in Aina’s career.

“The 28-year-old’s defensive contributions have helped Matz Sels secure 12 Premier League clean sheets this season, the most in the league, and the joint-most of Aina’s career,” the club noted.

Additionally, Aina has been a key disruptor in opposition attacks, leading the Forest squad with 30 interceptions in the 2024/25 season, ranking him 26th in the Premier League.

“In addition, Aina has made 30 interceptions this season, the most in the Forest squad, and the joint-26th most across the Premier League,” the statement added.

Aina’s defensive prowess was on full display in Forest’s recent 1-0 victory over Manchester City, where his crucial tackle on Omar Marmoush led to the game-winning goal.

“His tackle on Omar Marmoush against Manchester City on Saturday won the ball back for the Reds, ultimately leading to the game’s winning goal against the champions,” the club highlighted.

Against City’s Jérémy Doku, Aina demonstrated impressive resilience, winning four ground duels, making three clearances including two headed and recovering the ball four times.
