Chelsea slumped to a dismal 3–0 defeat against Brighton on Tuesday, a result that leaves their Champions League ambitions hanging by a thread and piles further pressure on under-fire manager Liam Rosenior.

Rosenior’s side delivered one of their poorest displays of an already troubled season. Ferdi Kadioglu opened the scoring in the first half, before Jack Hinshelwood and Danny Welbeck added further goals after the break to seal a comprehensive win for Brighton.

The loss etched an unwanted milestone into Chelsea’s history: it is the first time since 1912 that they have lost five consecutive league games without scoring, a grim statistic that underlines the scale of their decline.

Across all competitions, the Blues have now lost seven of their last eight matches, managing just one win in their previous nine league outings. They sit seventh in the table, seven points adrift of fifth-placed Liverpool in the race for a top-five finish and a coveted Champions League spot.

With their form in freefall, Chelsea now risk missing out on European football altogether unless they can arrest their alarming slide.

Attention turns to Sunday’s FA Cup semi-final against Leeds at Wembley, where defeat could leave Rosenior’s position hanging by a thread just months after his January arrival from Strasbourg to replace Enzo Maresca.

Despite the downturn, Rosenior insisted this week that Chelsea’s owners have been “magnificent” in their support, while co-owner Behdad Eghbali has publicly backed the manager’s long-term vision. Nevertheless, the mood around the club is growing increasingly hostile.

Boos rang out at Stamford Bridge following Saturday’s 1–0 loss to Manchester United, after fans had already protested against the BlueCo ownership before kick-off. Frustration spilled over again at the Amex Stadium, where travelling supporters jeered both players and manager as Brighton climbed above Chelsea into sixth place.

Rosenior attempted to tighten his side by switching to a back five, but the plan quickly unravelled. Within seconds, Kaoru Mitoma forced a sharp save from Robert Sanchez, setting the tone for a relentless Brighton start.

The breakthrough came in the third minute. Pascal Gross’ corner caused chaos in the Chelsea box, and Kadioglu reacted quickest to fire home his first goal in 17 months after a defensive lapse.

Gross continued to dictate proceedings with a series of dangerous deliveries, nearly creating a second when Jan Paul van Hecke’s header was tipped over by Sanchez.

Chelsea, meanwhile, were in complete disarray. Sanchez almost handed Brighton another goal with a misplaced pass that led to a Hinshelwood effort being cleared off the line by Trevoh Chalobah.

Alarmingly, Chelsea failed to register a single shot in the opening 30 minutes — a first for them in a league match this season. When Chalobah finally did manage an effort before half-time, it was met with derision from supporters chanting, “we want our Chelsea back.”

The frustration only intensified after the break. Romeo Lavia fired wide early in the second half, prompting further abuse from the away end.

Any hope of a comeback was extinguished in the 56th minute. Chelsea appeals for a free-kick following a suspected handball were waved away, allowing Brighton to counter at speed. Georginio Rutter surged forward before teeing up Hinshelwood, who finished coolly to double the lead.

Chelsea offered little in response, and Rosenior cut a helpless figure on the touchline as Brighton delivered the final blow in stoppage time. Maxim De Cuyper’s cut-back found Welbeck, who rifled the ball into the roof of the net to complete a dominant performance.

As the final whistle sounded, Rosenior could only shake his head — a gesture that mirrored the growing despair surrounding Chelsea’s season.
