President Bola Tinubu has appointed Shamsedeen Ogunjimi as the new Accountant General of the Federation (AGF), with the appointment set to take effect on March 7, 2025, coinciding with the retirement of the incumbent AGF, Oluwatoyin Madehin.
Ogunjimi, 57, was initially selected as Madehin’s successor in December 2024. His appointment was finalized after a rigorous and competitive process conducted by a committee tasked with evaluating Directors of Accounts in the Federal Civil Service.
The selection process included a written assessment, an ICT proficiency test, and oral interviews, emphasizing President Tinubu’s commitment to transparency and excellence in public appointments.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, Bayo Onanuga, the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, highlighted the importance of Ogunjimi’s appointment. “The selection process reflects President Tinubu’s commitment to promoting transparency, competence, and excellence in key public service positions,” the statement read.
Ogunjimi’s appointment aligns with the administration’s focus on placing qualified individuals in critical roles. A graduate of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, Ogunjimi earned a Bachelor of Science in Accountancy in 1990, followed by a Master’s degree in Accounting and Finance from the University of Lagos. He is a fellow of both the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) and the Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria (CITN), bringing a wealth of expertise to his new role.
President Tinubu congratulated Ogunjimi on his appointment and set clear expectations for his tenure. “President Tinubu congratulates Ogunjimi on his appointment and urges him to serve Nigeria with integrity, professionalism, and dedication,” Onanuga’s statement added. The President’s charge underscores the administration’s focus on accountability and efficient financial management.
Ogunjimi will assume the role at a critical time as Nigeria navigates economic reforms and fiscal challenges. His appointment follows the retirement of Oluwatoyin Madehin, who served as AGF until March 7, 2025. The transition marks a continued effort to strengthen financial oversight and governance within the Federal Government.
