Esther Nworgu delivered Nigeria’s first gold medal of the 2026 Commonwealth Games with a dominant performance in the women’s lightweight para powerlifting event, leading a historic one-two finish for Team Nigeria.
Nworgu produced a best lift of 123kg to score 119 points, securing the gold medal and opening Nigeria’s title account at the Games.
Her triumph was followed by compatriot Esther Oyema, who claimed silver after recording a best lift of 125kg for 115.5 points.
England’s Olivia Broome completed the podium, taking bronze with a lift of 119kg and a total score of 106.6 points.
The victory was further highlighted by Nworgu’s record-breaking display, as she set two Commonwealth Games records during the competition and established herself as one of the standout athletes in Glasgow.
A Paralympic silver medallist, Nworgu produced a composed and technically impressive performance to overcome a strong field, while veteran Oyema added another major international medal to her decorated career.
The result further underlined Nigeria’s dominance in para powerlifting, a sport that has consistently delivered medals for the country at major global competitions.
