The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) on Saturday dismissed claims made in a viral video alleging that its premium motor spirit (PMS) does not last as long as that from Dangote Refinery.
In a statement signed by its Chief Corporate Communications Officer, Olufemi Soneye, NNPCL described the claim as misleading, false, and completely unfounded.
The viral video, which was shared widely online, featured a content creator who claimed to have purchased a litre of Dangote petrol from MRS Filling Station in Alapere, Lagos, for N925, while the same litre at NNPCL’s Ojodu Berger station was sold for N945. According to the video, after testing the fuel in different generators, the one running on NNPCL fuel stopped after 17 minutes, while the generator running on Dangote petrol lasted 33 minutes.
However, NNPCL swiftly refuted these claims, attributing them to unverified and amateur research that lacks the credibility, accuracy, and professional oversight necessary for a valid comparison.
The company emphasized that a significant percentage of the fuel sold at its stations, including the one in question, is sourced from Dangote Refinery.
“The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) strongly refutes the false and misleading allegations circulating in a viral video, which claims that NNPCL fuel does not last. This assertion is baseless and unfounded, originating from unverified and unprofessional research that is neither credible nor accurate,” the statement read.
“NNPCL Ltd reassures consumers that its fuel is formulated with one of the best compositions, ensuring optimal performance, longevity, and environmental sustainability. Furthermore, it is important to highlight that a substantial portion of the Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) sold at NNPCL retail stations in Lagos—where this deceptive video was filmed—is sourced from the Dangote Refinery, a valued partner in supporting local production and energy security.”
NNPCL further noted that Dangote Refinery adheres to strict industry standards, ensuring the high quality of the petroleum products distributed to consumers. The company condemned the video as a deliberate attempt by economic saboteurs to undermine its reputation.
“We will not tolerate deliberate misinformation aimed at damaging our operations and misleading Nigerians. NNPCL Ltd is committed to taking legal action against individuals or groups who intentionally spread falsehoods about our brand and operations. Those responsible for such malicious activities will be fully accountable under the law,” the statement continued.
NNPCL urged the public to disregard the fabricated claims and instead rely on verified sources for accurate information, reaffirming its commitment to ensuring the availability, affordability, and quality of fuel for all Nigerians, while maintaining global industry standards.
