Jeremiah Useni, a former Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and retired army officer, has passed away at the age of 82 following a prolonged illness.
Useni’s death was confirmed on Thursday night by Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang in a statement issued by his Director of Press and Public Affairs, Gyang Bere.
Governor Mutfwang expressed deep sorrow at Useni’s passing, calling it a significant loss to his family, the Nigerian Armed Forces, Plateau State, and the entire nation. He commended Useni’s exemplary leadership and unwavering commitment to promoting peace and security, particularly in Northern Nigeria and Plateau State.
In the statement, Governor Mutfwang reflected on Useni’s distinguished career, which spanned military and political service. He served Nigeria in various key roles, including as Minister of Transport, Quarter-Master General of the Nigerian Army, and Minister of the FCT. After retiring from the military, Useni entered politics, where he continued his service as Deputy Chairman of the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) and later as a Senator for Plateau South in 2015 under the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).
The governor paid tribute to Useni’s legacy of selflessness, compassion, and dedication to both his country and community. He highlighted how Useni’s contributions to the military, politics, and society would be remembered by those whose lives he touched.
“On behalf of my family, the government, and the people of Plateau State, I extend my deepest condolences to the President, the Nigerian Armed Forces, Useni’s family, and all who mourn the loss of this distinguished statesman,” Mutfwang said.
The statement concluded with prayers for divine strength and comfort for Useni’s family, Plateau State, and the nation during this difficult time.
