Appeal court affirms Abure as Labour Party national chairman

Julius Abure, Labour Party chairman
The Court of Appeal, Abuja Division, has upheld the position of Julius Abure as the National Chairman of the Labour Party.

In a judgment delivered on Friday by Justice Hamma Barka, a three-member panel affirmed its earlier ruling from November 13, 2024, recognizing Abure’s leadership. The court confirmed that this decision remains unchallenged by any other court.

Justice Barka’s ruling followed two separate appeals filed by Senator Esther Nenadi Usman, the Labour Party caretaker committee, and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). The court emphasized that it did not address the substantive issue of Labour Party leadership, as such matters fall outside the scope of judicial review.

Additionally, the court ruled that any actions taken outside its jurisdiction are null and void, effectively nullifying the October 8, 2024, judgment by the Federal High Court, delivered by Justice Emeka Nwite. The Appeal Court struck out the suit, reaffirming its previous decision that Abure remains the lawful National Chairman of the Labour Party.
