The Deputy Chief Whip of the House of Representatives, Adewunmi Onanuga, has passed away.
Onanuga, who was born on December 2, 1965, died on Wednesday, January 15, 2025, at the age of 59 after a brief illness. At the time of her death, she was serving as the Deputy Chief Whip and represented the Ikenne/Sagamu/Remo North Federal Constituency of Ogun State.
In a statement, the House of Representatives expressed deep sorrow over the loss of the “passionate advocate” and vibrant lawmaker.
A tribute to a vibrant lawmaker
House spokesperson Akin Rotimi paid tribute to Onanuga, reflecting on her significant contributions to Nigeria’s political landscape. He highlighted her unwavering dedication to improving society and her relentless commitment to public service.
“Affectionately known as ‘Ijaya,’ Rep. Onanuga’s intellect, passion, humility, and pursuit of excellence earned her the admiration of both her colleagues and constituents,” Rotimi said. “Her legacy of service and dedication will continue to inspire future generations.”
The House extended heartfelt condolences to Onanuga’s family, friends, associates, the Government and People of Ogun State—particularly her Ikenne/Sagamu/Remo North constituency—and the entire National Assembly.
“Her passing is a great loss to Nigeria, but her legacy will live on,” the statement concluded. “Funeral arrangements will be announced by her family in due course. May her soul rest in peace.”
A monumental loss
Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun also expressed deep sympathy over Onanuga’s death, describing it as both shocking and devastating. He referred to her passing as a monumental loss to both Ogun State and Nigeria.
Governor Abiodun praised Onanuga as a fearless leader, loyal party member, and a passionate advocate for women’s empowerment and the well-being of her constituents.
Onanuga was first elected to the House in 2019 under the All Progressives Congress (APC) and served as Chairperson of the House Committee on Women Affairs and Social Development in the 9th Assembly, where she championed policies aimed at advancing social welfare and empowering women. Re-elected in 2023, she was appointed Deputy Chief Whip of the 10th Assembly.
