Tech giant Apple unveiled significant updates to its artificial intelligence offerings on Wednesday, integrating OpenAI’s ChatGPT into its native applications, including Siri, on iPhone and iPad.
In a notable shift for the privacy-centric company, Apple has partnered with OpenAI to incorporate ChatGPT into its Writing Tools and Siri virtual assistant, enabling users to access the AI chatbot seamlessly within Apple’s ecosystem.
First announced in June, this move represents Apple’s most ambitious foray into generative artificial intelligence, aiming to rival competitors like Google and Samsung, which have already integrated similar AI features into their Android devices.
Since the launch of OpenAI’s ChatGPT in 2022, Apple has worked to establish its AI strategy, as Microsoft and Google have rapidly rolled out their own AI-powered products.
The ChatGPT integration is part of Apple’s “Apple Intelligence” system, which also includes AI-driven tools such as Image Playground for image editing and Genmoji, an emoji generator.
The new AI features are initially available in six English-speaking countries, including the United States, Australia, Canada, and the United Kingdom, with plans to expand to 11 additional languages in 2024, starting with an April software update.
