A fire has broken out at the Ebute Ero market in Lagos State, causing significant damage to several shops.
The incident was confirmed in a statement issued on Saturday by Margaret Adeseye, Director of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service. According to Adeseye, the fire began in the early hours of Saturday at the market, located near the Police Station adjacent to Carter Bridge on Lagos Island.
She praised the swift response of firefighters from the Ebute Elefun, Dolphin, Sari-Iganmu, and Alausa stations, whose efforts successfully contained the blaze and prevented it from spreading beyond the point of origin.
“Their prompt action effectively managed the situation, minimizing further damage,” Adeseye stated.
While the fire has now been extinguished, it led to the destruction of several lock-up shops within bungalow structures that housed various tools and kitchenware businesses. A mop-up operation is currently underway, and an enumeration process is being conducted to assess the number of affected shops and estimate the financial losses.
An investigation is also ongoing to determine the cause of the fire. Fortunately, no casualties have been reported from the incident.
